Second generation Moodle (aka Collaborative Learning Environment at UCSF) is currently being piloted here at UCSF. You might want to take a look at Convergence, a blog dedicated to supporting the adoption of Moodle 2.3 (we’re skipping right over 2.0 – 2.2x). I’m very excited about the new tools and features! Looks to me that the new and improved Moodle is more learner friendly, offering interface customization and self-directed learning paths. Hopefully this will move us further along in terms of having a system that is more balanced in terms of faculty functions and learning functions and supports. If you look at the training topics for the existing version of Moodle, you will find very few topics directed toward learners — hopefully this will “flip” somewhat with the new version.
The first CTSI course that will be built and conducted with Moodle 2.3 is Scientific Writing — Publishing your Research Results. Our plan calls for launch of this new course in either fall 2013 or winter 2014. We will also convert our existing courses, Designing Clinical Research (DCR) and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) to the new platform over the upcoming summer months.
